Visit Jordan

A trip to Jordan is a trip back in time. This desert oasis is the setting for Bible stories, mysterious lost cities and even scenes from blockbuster hits like Lawrence of Arabia and Indiana Jones.

The Capital city, Amman, has a modern feel when compared with other big cities in the region. It’s hip and sophisticated; dotted with ancient ruins like its columned Citadel and 6,000-seat Roman Theatre atop Jabal al-Qala’a hill. It’s worthwhile to spend at least a little time here before heading off to the more sought after destinations such as Petra, the Dead Sea or Wadi Rum.

The Nabataean “Rose City” at Petra should be at the top of your list if you’re travelling to Jordan. Situated between the Dead Sea and Red Sea, this Unesco Heritage Site and one of New 7 Wonders of the World was half-built and half-carved into the surrounding red, pink and white sandstone cliffs. Now abandoned, it’s an inspiring place that still seems to hold secrets. Amazingly, the vast majority of the archaeological site (around 85%), has yet to be unearthed.

Just two hours from Petra is Wadi Rum. Camp out with the nomadic Bedouin in one of the world’s best desert climbing and hiking destinations, or take a romantic hot air balloon flight over the dunes. The Dead Sea is another spot to kick back and let your worries float away – with water 10% saltier than that of the ocean, you’ll never feel lighter.

Jordanians are known for their gracious hospitality, so embrace their invitation to share a tea or meal if offered. You won’t regret it.
