Why a Family Holiday in Mauritius is More Affordable Than You Think

Desperate for a tropical island family holiday that won't break the bank? Look no further than the stunning island of Mauritius. In this guide, we take you through the island’s free or super affordable family-friendly attractions, the best affordable accommodation options, and where to find delicious yet affordable local cuisine. We also provide tips on how to save money on transportation, how to find the best deals on activities, and much more.

Why Mauritius is an Affordable Family Holiday Destination

Known for its breathtaking beaches and crystal-clear waters, Mauritius may seem like an extravagant destination, but in reality it’s one of the most accessible and affordable island holiday destinations for South African travellers.

Your dream of a family holiday in Mauritius may be more realistic than you think

A key reason for this is the wide range of accommodation options available. From self-catering apartments and to all-inclusive resorts, there are options to suit almost every budget. Add in travel deals offered by top hotels and resorts, like Beachcomber’s current flash sale offering 30-40% off select resort packages, and your dream Mauritian holiday is suddenly within budgetary reach!

Circled by sea, even the most budget hotels/guest houses have access to Mauritius' beautiful beaches

Additionally, Mauritius offers a variety of free or low-cost activities for families to enjoy. Whether it's exploring the island's natural beauty, visiting cultural sites, or participating in water sports, there are plenty of options that won't break the bank.

Beyond the beaches, Mauritius offers plentiful natural – and free! – attractions

The local currency, Mauritian Rupee, also offers favourable exchange rates for South Africans travelling with Rands, plus South Africans don’t require a visa to visit the island, reducing admin costs. Last but not least, the cost of food is generally reasonable, especially if you opt for local eateries and street food.

Cheapest Time of Year to Visit Mauritius

Choosing the right time to visit Mauritius can significantly impact the cost of your family holiday. Mauritius' low season typically falls from May to June, and then again in September. During these months the weather is still pleasant, but the tourist crowds are thinner.

Mauritius: a dream family holiday

During these periods, you can take advantage of discounted accommodation rates and find better deals on flights. Additionally, attractions and activities may offer special promotions or reduced prices during the shoulder seasons, allowing you to enjoy more for less. (Top Tip: Always check Sure Travel Connect Activities for low-season deals on activities, excursions and attractions).

Budget-Friendly Family Accommodation Options in Mauritius

When it comes to finding affordable family-friendly accommodation in Mauritius, you have plenty of options to choose from. Several budget-friendly hotels and guesthouses offer comfortable rooms with good amenities such as swimming pools and basic entertainment facilities.

Whether you stay in an all-inclusive resort or a self-catering guesthouse, Mauritius' beaches are never far away

If you prefer more space and privacy, renting a self-catering apartment or villa can be a cost-effective option. These types of accommodation often come with fully equipped kitchens, allowing you to prepare your own meals and save money on dining out.

All-inclusive resorts are another surprisingly affordable option for family travellers. While these resorts may seem more expensive upfront, they offer packages that often include flights, hotel transfers, all or most meals, some or all drinks and activities, which would tally up to far more if you paid for each separately (see 'The Hidden Costs of Booking Your Own Travel vs. Package Holidays' for more on this). These inclusive resort packages also help cost-conscious travellers stick to a budget and avoid unexpected expenses.

This special deal, valid for bookings made by 15 February and valid for travel from 1 to 13 June 2024, further reduces the price of a five-night stay at select Beachcomber resorts. Free and Almost-Free Activities and Attractions in Mauritius

Mother Nature blessed Mauritius with a rich and diverse bounty. From mountains to sea, the island’s plentiful natural attractions are not only breath-taking, many are also either free or only charge a minimal entry or conservation fee. Like the rainbow hills of Terres des Sept Couleurs (translated as the “Seven-coloured earths”) at Chamarel. Scientists believe the natural wonder was formed when decomposing molten volcanic rock transitioned into clay and then soil, and the colour shades are a result of different external temperatures during this cooling process – but the jury’s still out. Rains have since carved the rock and soil into surrealist hills of striped red, brown, purple, green, blue and yellow.

Nearly surrounded by coral reef, Mauritius is paradise for sailing, swimming, snorkelling, water skiing and scuba diving. Most resorts offer a host of water sports to keep those of all ages and abilities busy. Balaclava, Blue Bay, Belle Mare, Flic en Flac, Pereybere, and Trou aux Biches are some of the best spots for water activities.

Discover Mauritius' underwater world

While the beaches get a lot of glory, Mauritius has some pretty special mountains too. The mountains form a ring around the island, while the longest mountain range, Moka Range, is in Port Louis. Cascade 500 Pieds near Alexandra Falls and Lion Mountain are great to climb, while hikers of all abilities will love the varying levels of trails at Black River Gorges National Park.

More serious hikers will want to conquer the historic Le Morne Mountain, a roughly four-hour trek that offers up incredible views from the top. Another must for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts is a day trip to the Seven Cascades of Tamarind Falls in southwest Mauritius. The first three falls are easily reachable on foot, however some of the others will require abseiling or canyoning (using ropes, climbing and cliff jumping) and are best accessed with a qualified guide.

Another almost-free activity is a trip to the southern hemisphere’s oldest botanical garden, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden. Covering around 37.5 hectares, this verdant garden will engulf you with the scents of flowers, spices, fruits and vegetables from the world over.

From mountain to sea, Mauritius has been blessed by Mother Nature

Cost Saving Dining Options in Mauritius

Exploring the local cuisine is an essential part of any family holiday, and in Mauritius, you can do so without breaking the bank. Look for small local eateries, known as "snacks," where you can enjoy delicious street food at affordable prices. From rotis and samosas to dholl puri and gateau piment, there are plenty of flavours to discover.

Fresh produce at Central Market in Port Louis

Locals recommend the informal food court at the Municipal Council of Quatre Bornes for a wide selection of local street food, while beyond the Central Market in Port Louis you’ll find the Chinese district crammed with traditional shops and restaurants. There’s no shortage of street stalls here, but it’s definitely worth seeking out First Restaurant for a taste of how Cantonese cuisine has taken on an island flavour. The restaurant is always packed with locals and has an extensive menu of Mauritian-influenced dim sum.

While the capital of Port Louis is a great place to start your foodie wanderings, it’s certainly not your final destination. Discover Creole home cooking at Escale Créole in Moka, or tuck into the famous octopus vindaye at Chez Rosy le Gris Gris in Souillac. Visit the Sunday market in Flacq for excellent boulet and fish curry.

Another budget-friendly option is to visit the local markets, where you can find fresh fruits, vegetables, and local ingredients to prepare your own meals. This not only saves money but also allows you to experience the vibrant flavours of Mauritius first-hand.

Exploring Mauritius on a Budget

Getting around Mauritius on a budget is relatively easy, thanks to its well-connected public transportation system. Buses are the most affordable mode of transport and can take you to almost every corner of the island. They are also a great way to immerse yourself in the local culture and interact with friendly locals.

Save money and travel like a local on Mauritius' efficient bus service

For shorter distances or more flexibility, you can consider renting a car. While this may involve additional costs, it can be a cost-effective option if you plan to explore different parts of the island at your own pace. Additionally, car rental agencies often offer competitive rates, especially during the shoulder seasons.

Tips for Saving Money on a Family Holiday in Mauritius

To make your family holiday in Mauritius even more affordable, here are some additional tips:

An exotic destination at a fraction of the cost, if you follow our cost-saving tips

1. Book your flights, accommodation and activities via trusted booking platforms well in advance to secure the best deals (plus, more on how pre-booking activities and excursions can save you big time here).

2. Look for package deals that include flights, accommodation, meals, drinks and activities for a discounted price (more on why booking a package holiday can be the cheapest option here).

3. Take advantage of free or low-cost activities such as hiking, beachcombing, and exploring local markets. Bring snorkelling equipment from home and hire a car for a day of discovering hidden beaches round the island.

4. Opt for public transportation (locals are friendly and helpful, so don't be shy to ask for help), or rent a car for days when you want to explore the island at your leisure.

5. Pack your own snacks and drinks for day trips and excursions to avoid buying expensive refreshments on the go. If you don't book an all-inclusive hotel, make sure your accommodation is nearby a supermarket – this will save a lot on eating out costs. Also enquire ahead of the time whether you may take wine to the table at your hotel, as the corkage fee will be cheaper than purchasing a bottle from their wine list.

6. Consider purchasing a prepaid SIM card for your phone to save on roaming charges and stay connected without overspending.
