A host of wildlife options – for all budgets and tastes

What makes Zambia’s game viewing so good? Most of the country is situated on an elevated plateau with vast woodlands and river valleys, which transition to mountains in the north east. Water from the Zambezi and Congo rivers act as a huge drainage basin, thus ensuring extensive wetlands and floodplains are home to staggering biodiversity in plants, mammals and birds.

The luxury reserves and lodges in Zambia are some of Southern Africa’s best (like this one) and are well worth a splurge for their unbeatable locations and staff who spoil their guests rotten. Most are at least half the price of similar offerings you’ll find in neighbouring Botswana, but just as good for game viewing and unique wilderness experiences.

Some of the best national parks and nature reserves to visit include the following:

  • South Luangwa National Park: large populations of predators, including the elusive leopard. The park has become well known for its guided walking safaris and night drives.
  • Kafue National Park: Zambia’s oldest and largest park, with big cats, hippos, and spectacular birding and fishing.
  • Blue Lagoon National Park: close to Lusaka, this park is still relatively undiscovered. It’s home to herds of Kafue Lechwe (a species of antelope listed as “vulnerable on the IUCN Red List), as well as buffalo, eland, wildebeest and many waterbirds.
  • Lower Zambezi National Park: one of Zambia’s newest parks, known for healthy numbers of the Big Five, as well as canoe and boat safaris. The park lies across the river from Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools Reserve and the two areas form an extensive wildlife sanctuary.
  • Victoria Falls' Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park: a worthwhile destination for birders (you’ll also spot elephants, giraffe and zebra on the circular drive), which includes the thundering Victoria Falls.
  • Lilayi Elephant Nursery: NGO that rehabilitates orphaned baby elephants and releases them back into the wild (with daily feedings available for public viewing).
  • Lusaka National Park: relatively small but this does offer a good chance to see its resident white rhino up close and personal – and it’s close to the city.
  • Liuwa Plain National Park: untouched wilderness (go with a tour operator, as there are no self-drive facilities available), with notable populations of the endangered wild dog, hyena, lions and wildcat.
  • Munda Wanga Environmental Park: this botanical garden and wildlife conservation/education centre is home to fan favourites, like lions and pangolins.
  • Chaminuka Game Reserve: this lodge and game reserve offers game drives, fishing, horse riding and cheetah walks.

Here, rare sightings are not-so-rare

In Zambia, you don’t have to be in a fenced area to see the full roster of endemic wildlife. In fact, most of the national parks and accommodation options are unfenced, leaving elephants, hippos, lions and giraffes free to roam. Moreover, notoriously shy leopards are a common sighting in parks such as South Luangwa.

Walk on the wild side

Among wildlife buffs, Zambia is celebrated for its guided bush walks – and the extensive tracking knowledge of local guides. Many grew up in close proximity to wildlife and are adept at helping guests navigate the parks safely on foot.

Tick one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders off your bucket list

And when in Zambia, of course, a visit to the might Victoria Falls (and Devil’s Pools) is not to be missed. Not only that, but there are plenty of adrenaline-inducing activities to keep you busy in Livingstone (or just across the border in Zimbabwe) such as white-water rafting through the Batoka Gorge, bungee jumping or gorge swinging, horseback trails, tandem kayaking or microlight/helicopter flights over the falls.

. . . .

Culture is king

With some 70 ethnic groups (and just as many languages), Zambia is one of sub-Saharan Africa's most highly-urbanised countries. Nearly half of its population of 13.5 million lives in the capital (Lusaka is one of the continent’s fastest-growing cities) or other “copper belt” towns.

There are modern hotels and restaurants to relax and refuel, whether you’re on a business trip or travelling for leisure. And most South Africans won’t have a difficult time expressing themselves, as English is the official language. African languages of Nyanja and Bemba are also commonly spoken by locals.
