Visit Mozambique

Stretching in a long, lazy line up the east coast, South Africa’s tropical neighbour has become synonymous with the perfect beach holiday. But while often billed as a sun and sand resort destination for honeymooners and holidaymakers, this coastal nation is packed with all the fixings of a well-rounded trip.

From Ponto do Oura in the south to Inhambane further north, Mozambique is studded with postcard perfect beaches, world class diving, fishing and an easy-going tropical vibe.

Once a vital link on the spice route, the port town of Inhambane harks back to a forgotten era and is lined with cobblestone streets and old colonial buildings, while regal dhows still ply the coastline.

If you’re a budget traveller, head up the coast to Tofo for world-class surf, whale shark safaris and a chill backpacker vibe. You might be able to talk a local fisherman into taking you out on their dhow at sunset or help pull in the catch of the day. Pair your fish with matapa, a local dish of cassava leaves and peanut sauce, along with a Dois M or Manica, the popular Mozambican beer.

If the mainland still feels too close to home, offshore constellations like Bazaruto and the Qirambas combine five-star luxury with tropical bliss like few other places on Earth. Bazaruto National Park, off the coast of Vilanculos, is a paradise for birders, while Quirimbas National Park is known for coral reefs, dolphins, whales and endangered dugongs (sea cows).

The capital Maputo boasts a world-class jazz scene, lively nightclubs and some of the best (and cheapest) seafood, fruit and nuts you’ll ever eat. Its mix of African, Portuguese, Arabic and Indian influences makes it a diverse and fun city to explore.

As you head away from the coast, wind your way into the heart of rural Africa on the Nampula-Cuamba train, or explore the secluded coves and crystal clear waters at Lake Niassa (aka Lake Malawi if you’re across the border).

The Chimanimani Mountains are a great hiking destination if you’re looking to beat the heat – trek through the lush green mountains and spectacular gorges.

And finally, there’s the food. Mozambique’s history as a former Portuguese colony has imbued it with a lingering taste that’s as spicy as it is delicious. From prego rolls to peri-peri chicken and prawns, to the ubiquitous Paõ (pronounced pow) – white Portuguese rolls baked in a wooden oven – your taste buds will never want to go home, and neither will you.
