Greece is a darling of the travel world for good reason: its classical antiquity, whitewashed island villages and boisterous hospitality – coupled with brilliant Mediterranean sunsets – are the stuff of dreams.
Few leave Greece uninspired. Sprawling Athens can seem dusty and overwhelming but a trip up to its imposing Parthenon gives perspective to the birthplace of democracy. The capital is the central hopping off point to the Greek Islands by ferry or plane: Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Symi, Crete and Corfu are some of the best.
The island life is a little slower paced. Rent a scooter and motor your way around to black, red or white sand beaches, or stop in at harbourside restaurant or taverna for the catch of the day and a shot of anise-flavoured ouzo liqueur. Sun-weathered men sit for hours over a cup of strong coffee, debating politics and watching the boats drop anchor.
Easter is a busy but worthwhile time to visit Greece – you’ll experience all the pomp and grandeur of Greek Orthodox processions, candlelit midnight church services, coloured eggs and sweet breads. Book ahead to ensure accommodation is available in the high season; otherwise, you can often step off the ferry, bus or train and be met by locals offering up apartments, rooms or budget B&Bs.
